Main characters: narrator, Gerda, Kay, the Snow Queen, Granny, Mrs. Gunning, street robbers (6), snowflakes (5).

Procedure
Narrator: Dear friends, we proudly present our play “The Snow Queen”. We hope you’ll enjoy it.

Act 1
Once upon a time there lived two friends: Kay and Gerda. They played together, shared their secrets, and went to school together. They loved each other dearly and couldn’t live without their friendship. Our story starts in winter.
Kay and Gerda are playing snowballs in the yard.They are running into the room, merrily shouting.
Kay: I’ll catch you!
Gerda: No way!
Kay: (stops suddenly) Hey! (Waves his hand.) Here is your snowball. (Hits her with a snowball.)
Gerda: (a bit angrily) Just you wait! (Runs for him, hitting him with a snowball.)
A voice of grandmother shouting.
Granny: Kay! Gerda! Dinner’s ready!
Kay, Gerda: We’re coming! (Run away from the room.)
In a few seconds they are running into Gerda’s granny’s house. Granny is sitting in the corner near the table and knitting.
Granny: Sit down and eat some soup!
Kids sit down at the table. Gerda and Kay bow down their heads and fold their hands blessing their dinner.
Gerda: Thank you for the food we eat.
           Thant you for the friends we meet.
           Thank you for the birds that sing.
           Thank you, God, for everything. Amen.
Kay: For all we eat, and all we wear,
        For daily bread, and nightly care,
        We thank you, Heavenly Father. Amen.
Gerda: Mmm! Yummy! (Both starts eating.)
Kay: Granny, tell us a story about the Snow Queen.
Granny: The Snow Queen rules the earth only in winter and she lives in Lapland, where there’s most ice and cold, no man can live there. She’d made of ice, but yet she’s alive. People say she looks into the windows at night ad after her look glass is covered with beautiful patterns.
Gerda: Can she come here?
Kay: If she does, I’ll put her on a hot stove, and she’ll melt. (Both laugh.)
The atmosphere changes. Suddenly it becomes cold. White snowflakes (the servants of the Snow Queen) appear in the room, dancing. At first, they are friendly, but then become violent and lure Kay into their dance, but Gerda takes him away. The Snow Queen appears. Everything gets quiet.
Snow queen: Stupid boy! Do you really think you can put me on a hot stove? (laughs angrily)Tonight you’ll see how wrong you are. Come with me into the land of Ice and I’ll make you its King. (Points her crook, luring Kay.  Kay is hypnotized, he stands up and leaves with the Queen.)
Gerda: No, Kay! Don’t believe her! Granny! ( Comes to Granny and cries.)
Granny: Hush, my darling! He’ll come back. His heart is not made of ice. Your love will save him.

Act 2
Narrator: The next day Gerda decided to find Kay and bring him home. She looked for Kay in Germany, Denmark, Switzerland, she crossed all Europe and one day she came into a beautiful garden in France. She was very tired and decided to stop here.
Mrs. Cunning: Bon jour! My name is Mrs. Cunning and you are in my garden.
Gerda: Hello, I’m Gerda. I’m looking for my brother Kay. Do you know where he is?
Mrs. Cunning: Oh, poor little child! Come – I’ll make you some tea with cheese cake. Come… forget about everything. Come and have some sleep.
Gerda immediately falls asleep. The next minutes Mrs. Cunning falls asleep too.
Narrator: A year passed and Gerda was still in deep sleep enchanted by Mrs. Cunning.
Gerda: (wakes up) Where am I? I don’t remember anything. Where am I going? (A picture of Kay falls from her pocket.) Oh! It’s Kay – I must find him!
Gerda runs away.

Act 3
Narrator: While Gerda was looking for Kay, he was in Lapland – the land of the Snow Queen. She took him to her Ice Castle and tried to change him from an active and loving boy, into a reserved and cruel one.
Snow Queen: Kay! Look at me, what do you remember?
Kay: (playing with icicles) I remember the flowers in my garden… my friends…
Snow Queen: Flowers? (Laughs.) Remember what I told you – flowers, spring, love, friendship, poetry – they don’t exist and soon you will forget about it.
Kay: I remember Gerda too…
Snow Queen: Who? Thats fine, soon...   you’ll forget her too. There’s nothing in this world except cold, ice and snow.

Act 4
Narrator: Gerda ran away from a wicked woman and went to Finland. The weather there was horrible – it was a snowstorm and she was bitterly cold in the middle of the road late at night.
A strange voice: Hey! Quiet, boys!Somebody’s coming. Let’s see who’s this?
Six street robbers with knives and guns surround Gerda.
Gerda: Excuse me, I’m Gerda, I’m looking for my friend – Kay,have you seen him? Here’s his picture.
Joe: And I’m Joe. Look at your fur hat! Give it to me (takes her hat.)
Robber 1: And her mittens! (Takes her mittens.)
Robber 2: And her fur coat! (Takes her fur coat.)
Robber 3: And her bracelet! (Takes her bracelet.)
Robber 4: Money – give me your purse! Now! (Takes her purse.)
Gerda: Take everything just tell me where Kay is! (The robbers ran away.)
A minute later a boy comes on stage.
Jack: Hey! Who are you? Why are you crying? ( Gives her his fur coat.)
Gerda: I’m Gerda.
Jack: Jack. Nice to meet you.
Gerda: Some men robbed me and I’m frozen and I can’t find my friend Kay!
Jack: Were these  men with knives and guns?
 Gerda: Yes, do you know them?
Jack: It was my father and his gang. I’m sorry. I think I can help you. Wait here.
Jack comes back in a few minutes with Gerda’s mittens, fur coat, purse and bracelet.
Jack: Sh! (w hispers)Quick! Put it on! I took it when they slept. Be quick – go and find your friend – they can wake up any minute! Run!
Gerda: Oh! Thank you so much! You’ve been so kind to me. Here take my bracelet for good memory! Good luck to you, Jack.
Jack: Good luck to you, Gerda
Gerda runs away.

 Act 5
Narrator: Gerda spent a lot of time looking for Kay. Her trip was very tiring and dangerous, but she is strong and she finally reaches Lapland and found the Snow Queen’s Palace.
Gerda: Kay! Where are you?
Kay: Stop! Who are you?
Gerda: Sh! Oh, my dearest Kay, I found you!
Kay: Stop or I’ll shout!
Gerda: Don’t you remember me?
Kay: No.
Gerda: I’m Gerda. Oh, my poor Kay. This wicked Queen has put a spell on you (hugs him and cried).
Kay: You… ou… it’s you, you are my friend Gerda. (Hugs her and they sway in a dance.)
Gerda: Thanks God, you remember me!
The Snow Queen comes on stage.
Snow Queen: How dare you ruin my spell! You pity little girl! Take her! (to her servant – the snowflakes.)
Gerda fights the snowflakes back, they can’t touch her and Kay.
Snow Queen: You thought I was joking? Now, I’ll show you all my power. (Takes her crook and points at Kay.)
Gerda: (steps in front of Kay) No! Take me instead! He doesn’t deserve to die from your spell.
Snow Queen: Do you?
Gerda: He’s my friend and I’ll do everythingfor him.
Snow Queen: Even die?
Gerda: If I have to…
Snow Queen: I can’t explain it, no one has ever done that for me. You have one minute – run , both of you, until I change my mind.
Gerda:Thank you so much. ( Hugs and kisses her.)
Kay: Thanks. (He wants to kiss her, but changes his mind.)
Snow Queen: You! (To her servants) What are doing there? Come on! (Everybody leaves the stage.)

Act 6
Narrator: So, Kay and Gerda got home safe and sound. They were so happy to meet and promised never to leave each other in trouble.
Kay and Gerda come into the room where granny is sitting and knitting.
Granny: (splashes her hands in surprise) My dear! You’re back. I was so worried about you both! Glory to God!
Gerda: (runs to granny and hugs her) Granny! I’m so happy to see you again!
Kay: I thought I would never see you and home again!
Gerda: Granny, I have learnt that if you don’t have love – you are nothing.
Kay: Yes, Love is patient.
Granny: Love is kind.
The character of the play come on stage, stand in line and take each other by the hand.
Narrator: Love doesn’t envy.
Snow Queen: love doesn’t boast.
Snowflake 1: Love isn’t proud.
Snowflake 2: Love isn’t rude.
Snowflake 3: Love isn’t self seeking.
Snowflake 4: Love isn’t easily angered.
Snowflake 5: Love keeps no record of wrongs.
Mrs. Cunning: Love doesn’t delight in evil…
Joe: … but rejoices with the truh.
Robber 1: Love always protects.
Robber 2: Love always trusts.
Robber 3: Love always hopes.
Robber 4: Love always preserves.
Jack: Love never fails.
Everybody: Love never fails! Keep on loving!
